Bread in the Book (in more ways than one!)
Baking bread has become such a routine in my family’s life that I shouldn’t be surprised about the role of bread in my forthcoming children’s picture book, The Restless Grain. And as a homeschooling mom, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make this book an integrative experience, which is why I’ve included a bread recipe at the end of the book! Here are some pictures of my children (and me) recipe testing for The Restless Grain.

Your Child/Grandchild/Godchild in the Story
This bread recipe will connect children to their faith and to the story. I wanted the child to experience doing something that one of the characters in the story does. Take a look at this beautiful scene illustrated by Ximena Palencia of the son and mother in the book making bread together.
The boy helps his mother mix the little grain—who is now flour—with water to make dough. Text for this image will be in the upper left-hand corner. I’m so excited for children to re-enact this scene in their own kitchens with someone they love.
Eyes to See
Our faith has the capacity to take on more meaning when we begin to see the elements of our daily lives through a Christian lens. Our ordinary life is where faith becomes truly incarnational, or enfleshed. God is at work always and everywhere; Lord, give us the eyes to see.
It is my hope that The Restless Grain will delight, inspire wonder, and cultivate faith in the most beautifully ordinary moments of your life and the lives of the little ones you love.
Bread Recipes We Love
Finally, what’s a post on bread without a recipe or two? Here are a couple recipes we have enjoyed this summer. I’d love to try one of your favorite bread recipes—if you have one, please share it in the comments below!
This sourdough pita bread from Pantry Mama is fluffy and delicious with a Mediterranean themed meal.
These sourdough biscuits from Farmhouse on Boone are always a delight. I recently incorporated some rosemary from a friend’s garden into the dough for an herby twist.

We can’t wait to read your book and make the bread too! What a fantastic idea to include the recipe in the book!
